Bahrain is seeking to deepen its work with the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations as part of wider efforts to strengthen national food security, raise local farm output and support a more resilient agricultural sector. The discussions brought together Municipalities Affairs and Agriculture Minister Engineer Wael bin Nasser Al Mubarak and Dr Ahmed Mukhtar, FAO coordinator for the GCC countries and Yemen and the organisation’s representative in the UAE. Agriculture and Animal Wealth Affairs Undersecretary Engineer Asim Abdul Latif Abdullah also attended. The meeting centered on practical cooperation, including farmer support, modern production methods and sustainable use of resources.
Focus on local production
The ministry outlined its priorities for developing Bahrain’s agricultural sector, with particular attention to helping farmers improve productivity and adapt to changing conditions. Officials reviewed ways to expand domestic production while encouraging practices that protect land, water and other essential resources.
Al Mubarak underlined the importance of introducing advanced agricultural technologies and improving the efficiency of farming systems. These steps are seen as important for reducing pressure on resources while supporting the Kingdom’s long-term food security goals.
FAO expertise sought
A key part of the talks focused on how Bahrain can draw on FAO knowledge, technical programmes and regional experience. Cooperation with the organisation could support better resource management, stronger planning and more effective initiatives for sustainable agriculture.
The two sides also discussed broader areas of joint interest, including food security strategies and initiatives that can strengthen the durability of local production systems.
Regional sustainability goals
Dr Mukhtar confirmed FAO’s readiness to continue working with Bahrain in agriculture and food-related fields. He noted the Kingdom’s efforts to develop the sector and increase local output, while stressing the organisation’s support for projects that advance sustainability across the region.
The meeting reflects Bahrain’s continuing push to modernise agriculture, support producers and build a stronger base for food resilience in cooperation with international partners.
