Bahrain accelerates Phase I of Muharraq Development Project

Bahrain is moving ahead at pace with the first phase of the Muharraq Development Project, a major urban renewal programme aimed at upgrading housing, infrastructure and public spaces while safeguarding the city’s cultural character. The initial phase covers work across six neighbourhoods and includes the delivery and refurbishment of 300 homes, alongside improvements to roads, internal access routes, parking areas, building frontages, open spaces and landscaping. Progress on the scheme was reviewed during the 318th meeting of the Ministerial Committee for Development Projects and Infrastructure, chaired by Deputy Prime Minister Shaikh Khalid bin Abdulla Al Khalifa.

Housing and heritage works advance

Phase I combines residential delivery with the restoration of important heritage assets in Muharraq. The programme includes the rehabilitation of 16 heritage buildings along the Pearling Path, with the restored properties set to support tourism and cultural uses.

Officials expect this phase to be completed by the end of 2026. Housing and Urban Planning Minister Amna Al Romaihi said new model homes are now 92% complete, while restoration works have moved beyond 60%. The Muharraq Visitors’ Centre has reached 82% completion.

Second phase to expand housing supply

The project is also set to grow significantly under a later stage. Phase II is planned to add close to 2,000 residential units, with delivery expected to involve partnerships with the private sector.

The wider programme is intended to improve the urban fabric of Muharraq while maintaining its historic identity. Alongside housing, the works are focused on creating better neighbourhood connectivity, more accessible public areas and upgraded community facilities.

Roads and public spaces included

The ministerial committee also reviewed wider infrastructure activity, including efforts by the Ministry of Works to enhance Bahrain’s road network. Members noted progress on upgrades to routes serving Bahrain International Airport, following the start of Phase 3B works.

In addition, the committee was briefed on the tender award for Package 4 of the Busaiteen Link project. It also welcomed the reopening of Al Casino Park in Muharraq after renovation and facility upgrade works by the Ministry of Municipalities Affairs and Agriculture.
