Bahrain will continue to expand local food production, diversify supply sources and maintain stability in domestic markets, a senior government official said during a visit to a key food-sector establishment. The update focused on efforts to ensure the steady availability of essential commodities and to improve the efficiency of national producers.
Municipalities Affairs and Agriculture Minister Wael Al Mubarak met with officials from the Ministry and the General Poultry Company to review operations and development plans. The discussions highlighted a wider policy direction that links public oversight with support for private-sector growth under the National Food Security Strategy.
Minister reviews poultry production and expansion
During the visit, the minister received a briefing on the company’s current activities and reviewed new projects aimed at increasing production capacity. The officials also discussed steps intended to raise operational efficiency, with the goal of strengthening Bahrain’s food supply resilience.
Food security remains a national priority
Al Mubarak said that improving the performance of national productive sectors is essential for raising self-sufficiency. He also emphasised the need to ensure the sustainability of food commodities and to strengthen strategic stocks to reduce vulnerability in periods of stress.
The minister added that the ministry will monitor the work of local companies closely and facilitate expansion by providing relevant support aimed at helping projects move forward.
Public-private coordination and industry role
Officials underscored the importance of cooperation between government entities and the private sector. They said continued initiatives and policies would support agricultural and livestock production while enhancing the long-term sustainability of the food supply system.
Local output figures and policy proposals
According to the Bahrain Open Data Portal (data.gov.bh), Bahrain produces about 8,400 tonnes of chicken meat annually and generates roughly 100 million eggs each year on average, reflecting a significant rise since 2015.
The report also noted that MPs recently approved four urgent proposals related to consumer protection and food security, including measures to tighten oversight of subsidised flour and temporary steps involving fisheries and supply arrangements amid regional disruptions.
