Bahrain Bans Kingfish Net Fishing for Two Months

Bahrain has announced a temporary restriction on kingfish fishing aimed at protecting marine life and supporting sustainable stocks. The Supreme Council for Environment said the measure will halt the use of nets to catch kingfish inside the Kingdom’s territorial waters for a limited period during the species’ reproductive season.

The council noted that the timing coincides with kingfish breeding and spawning, when fish are most vulnerable and ecosystem pressures can increase. Authorities said the policy is part of ongoing efforts to preserve fish stocks and safeguard the marine environment.

Ban period and permitted method

Under the decision, net fishing for kingfish will be prohibited for two months, starting August 15, 2026, and ending on October 15, 2026. During this window, fishermen may only catch kingfish using fishing lines, rather than nets.

Why the restriction was introduced

Officials said the action is intended to reduce fishing pressure during the kingfish breeding and spawning period. By limiting certain capture methods during the most sensitive phase of the fish’s life cycle, the council expects better protection for future stock levels.

Compliance and enforcement warnings

The Supreme Council for Environment urged fishers to adhere to the ban strictly. It warned that attempting illegal kingfish net fishing during the restricted dates could lead to legal action.

Release requirements for accidental catches

In addition to banning net use, the council required fishermen to immediately release any kingfish caught in their gear during the ban. It also asked that fish be handled carefully to avoid harming them.
