Food safety authorities have issued a recall for selected batches of French brie cheese products after concerns were raised about the possible presence of Listeria monocytogenes. The alert, which falls under a “for action” category, requires retailers to remove the implicated stock from sale and to place recall information at point of purchase. Shoppers are also being advised not to consume the affected items identified by product name and use-by date.
The products covered by the recall include two widely sold brie lines: Dunnes Stores Velvety & Mild French Brie and Traditional Cheese Company French brie. The contamination risk is linked to Listeria monocytogenes, a bacterium associated with infections that can be serious for certain groups.
Affected products and use-by dates
- Dunnes Stores Velvety & Mild French Brie (170g): use-by dates 10/07/2026, 16/07/2026, and 17/07/2026.
- Traditional Cheese Company French brie (160g): use-by date 17/07/2026.
Health risk linked to Listeria
Symptoms of Listeria monocytogenes infection may resemble mild flu-like illness or may involve the gastrointestinal tract, including nausea, vomiting, or diarrhoea. In less common cases, the infection can become severe, especially among people who are pregnant, very young, elderly, or immunocompromised. The time between exposure and symptoms can average around three weeks, but can vary widely.
What retailers, suppliers and consumers should do
Retailers are asked to take the implicated batches off shelves immediately and to display recall notices at point-of-sale. Wholesalers and distributors should contact affected customers and ensure that recalled stock is returned, with point-of-sale notices provided to retailers. Consumers are advised not to eat the identified batches.
