Qatar has joined Gulf Cooperation Council discussions aimed at creating a shared system for strategic reserves covering food, medical products and other critical goods. The initiative is intended to improve the region’s ability to respond to supply pressures, emergencies and long-term demand while deepening coordination among member states. The talks reflect a wider GCC effort to build stronger food security frameworks and ensure that essential commodities can be managed more efficiently across the region. Officials examined ways to develop a more sustainable approach to reserve planning, with an emphasis on cooperation, preparedness and the needs of future generations.
Qatar Represented in GCC Meeting
The discussions were held remotely and brought together undersecretaries from ministries responsible for agriculture and food security, along with senior officials from GCC countries. Qatar was represented by H E Ali bin Mohammed Al Ali, Undersecretary of the Ministry of Municipality.
Plan for Regional Storage Zones
A central topic was the proposed creation of regional strategic storage zones. These facilities would support the availability of food, medicines and other high-priority supplies across the Gulf. By coordinating storage capacity at a regional level, GCC states aim to reduce vulnerabilities linked to disruptions in supply chains or sudden increases in demand.
Food Security and Integration
The planned system is part of broader efforts to reinforce Gulf integration in sectors that directly affect public welfare and economic stability. Shared planning could help member states exchange expertise, align policies and strengthen readiness for crises that may affect imports, distribution networks or access to essential commodities.
Long-Term Reserve Strategy
Officials also discussed the importance of developing a reserve framework that is efficient and sustainable. The goal is to create a system capable of supporting current needs while safeguarding access to essential goods for future generations across the GCC.
