The recall of instant noodle products found to contain a major allergen has been reclassified under health guidelines.
In May, Sun Noodle, a food manufacturer in Hawaii, voluntarily recalled its S&S Cup Saimin—Noodles With Soup & Garnishes because of the undeclared presence of egg, a major allergen. The affected products were distributed in four states: Hawaii, California, Nevada and Utah.
The recall has now been designated as a Class I by the Food and Drug Administration, the most serious type of recall. Previously, the recall was not under any of the FDA‘s three classification levels.
According to the FDA website, a Class I recall is issued when there is a “reasonable probability” that use of or exposure to a product could “cause serious adverse health consequences or death.”
A Class II recall is considered “a situation in which use of, or exposure to, a violative product may cause temporary or medically reversible adverse health consequences or where the probability of serious adverse health consequences is remote.” A less serious Class III recall is designated when the product in question is considered unlikely to cause any “adverse health consequences” once consumed or used.
