Bahrain Food Holding Company, known as Ghitha, has appointed Mahmood Zainal as its new chief executive officer as the company advances its role in strengthening the kingdom’s food sector. Ghitha is part of the portfolio of Mumtalakat, Bahrain’s sovereign wealth fund, and focuses on building value across food-related businesses. In his new post, Zainal will be responsible for guiding the company’s strategy and day-to-day operations while working with its board, affiliated businesses and external partners. The appointment comes as Bahrain continues to place greater emphasis on food security, private-sector collaboration and sustainable growth across the food value chain.
Strategic leadership role
Zainal will lead Ghitha’s efforts to develop its portfolio, improve operational performance and identify new opportunities in areas linked to food production, distribution and related services. His mandate includes supporting business expansion and helping build a more competitive and resilient food ecosystem in Bahrain.
The company’s leadership said the appointment marks a significant step in Ghitha’s development. Chairman Basim AlSaie welcomed Zainal’s arrival and said the company aims to deepen partnerships with the private sector while creating lasting value for Bahrain’s food industry.
Experience across investment and food sectors
Zainal brings more than two decades of experience in investment management, private banking and direct investment. He also has specialised knowledge of the food and beverage and agriculture industries, areas that align closely with Ghitha’s strategic priorities.
Previously, he served as executive director of investments at Esterad Bank, where he oversaw strategic investments in food and agriculture. His career has also included managing portfolios, handling acquisitions and exits, and serving on company boards across the GCC, the United States and Europe.
Focus on sustainable growth
In addition to his investment background, Zainal has experience in managing operating companies, building teams and shaping long-term business plans. He said he looked forward to working with Ghitha’s board, portfolio companies and partners to expand on the company’s foundations and pursue new growth opportunities.
Zainal holds a bachelor’s degree in commerce from Concordia University’s John Molson School of Business. He has also completed executive education programmes at the University of Oxford and Ivey Business School.
