Hydroponics and Traditional Farming Seen as Key to Qatar Desert Food Security

Qatar’s agricultural sector is looking increasingly to technology as it confronts the hard limits of desert production, including scarce freshwater, limited fertile soil and extreme heat. Jeacim Francis Adaya, founder and chief executive of Hydrovest Technology, says the most practical path is not to abandon conventional farming, but to combine it with controlled-environment systems such as hydroponics. The company, based at Qatar Science and Technology Park, is developing solutions designed for harsh desert conditions. Adaya argues that a mixed model can help expand local food output, reduce pressure on natural resources and support more reliable production throughout the year.

Hydroponics as a Complement

Adaya said soil-based farming will continue to play an important role, but soilless cultivation can fill gaps where open-field agriculture is difficult or uneconomical. Hydroponic systems allow crops to be grown in non-arable areas and can provide steady yields when weather or land quality restricts traditional production.

Reducing Water Pressure

One of the main advantages of modern hydroponics is its ability to reuse water. Closed-loop systems collect and recirculate nutrient-rich water, significantly cutting consumption compared with conventional irrigation. For commercial growers facing high operating costs, this can create a more predictable and resource-efficient production model.

Community-Level Food Security

Adaya also pointed to the value of smaller installations in residential areas, schools, urban spaces and community facilities. While each project may produce modest volumes, together they can strengthen local resilience and reduce vulnerability to import or logistics disruptions. Public education, he added, is essential so residents understand and participate in food production.

Desert Agriculture Innovation

The company’s longer-term focus includes technologies tailored specifically for desert farming, wider research collaboration and support for a stronger AgriTech business ecosystem across the Gulf. Adaya said this approach supports Qatar’s sustainability priorities and aligns with the broader goals of Qatar National Vision 2030, particularly in building more efficient local food systems and encouraging the next generation of agricultural entrepreneurs.
