MADISON, Wis. (WMTV) – Kids had the opportunity to participate in a Sustainability Safari at the Henry Vilas Zoo on Wednesday.
The event was held in partnership with youth leaders from the Dane County Youth Governance Program.
Participants enjoyed hands-on activities that focused on food waste reduction, composting and recycling.
“Kids are where it’s at, “Jess Thompson, Conservation and Education Curator at Henry Vilas Zoo said. “They’re the ones that have enthusiasm and are going to be able to take and run with some of these initiatives.”
Thompson added that sustainability is something everyone can be a part of.
“One of the things we are focused on today is composting,” said Thompson. “So thinking about where our food waste goes or our scraps from our meals, so that can banana peels or apple cores or foods we didn’t eat.”
Throughout the zoo, youth leaders hosted interactive stations where kids could learn about sustainable practices and simple ways to reduce waste.
