GCC Secretary General Highlights Blue Economy as Key to Sustainable Growth and Integration

The Secretary General of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC), Jasem Mohamed Albudaiwi, emphasized the critical role of the Blue Economy in shaping the future of sustainable development and integration among member states. His remarks came during a roundtable held on the sidelines of the 2026 World Governments Summit in Dubai, themed “Shaping Future Governments.”

Economic Potential Across GCC States

Albudaiwi noted that the Gulf region’s extensive coastlines and maritime advantages offer a strategic gateway for economic advancement through sectors such as fisheries, aquaculture, and marine tourism. As of 2025, the Blue Economy’s estimated value within the GCC exceeds $180 billion and is projected to reach $269 billion by 2032.

Global Outlook and Key Industries

On a broader scale, the Blue Economy contributes approximately 2.5% to global GDP, supporting over 30 million jobs. Growth is being driven by marine logistics, renewable energy, desalination, and sustainability-focused industries. The GCC is positioning itself to capitalize on this momentum while aligning with environmental and carbon neutrality goals.

Technology and Innovation as Enablers

Modern technologies, including Artificial Intelligence and Internet of Things applications, are pivotal in developing smart ports and boosting efficiency in maritime operations. Albudaiwi stressed that these advancements could significantly enhance the region’s competitiveness in global supply chains.

Environmental Stewardship and Policy Alignment

The Secretary General underlined the importance of environmental protection, stating that preserving marine ecosystems and combating pollution are foundational to a successful Blue Economy. He also called for unified legislation and harmonized port procedures to accelerate economic integration between member states.

Steps Toward a United Vision

To further this initiative, the GCC Secretariat’s Economic and Development Affairs Sector is preparing a regional policy framework to drive strategic collaboration. Albudaiwi concluded by calling for concrete steps to translate these strategies into practical, impactful programs that reinforce the region’s role as a global maritime leader.
