Candy Recalled Nationwide: Full List of Impacted Stores

More than two dozen candy lines have been recalled amid concerns that they could be contaminated with the potentially deadly food poisoning bug salmonella.

A string of sweet treats, from caramel pretzels to cookies, were the subject of a recall issued by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) due to the possibility of a public health risk. The products have been shipped nationwide to various stores, including Walmart, Hy-Vee, Dollar Central, and Target, along with various other wholesalers and smaller distributors.

Salmonella is a bacteria that is one of the most common causes of food poisoning. Affected patients typically suffer from diarrhea, fever, and stomach cramps, and can remain ill for up to a week, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Salmonella poisoning isn’t usually life-threatening, but it can be dangerous for more vulnerable patients, such as the elderly or those with weakened immune systems.

Concern was first raised last month when products from Hy-Vee—”To Go Cookies & Cream Mix” and “Whipped Cream Cheese Spread”—which had been made by a then-unnamed third party manufacturer, were recalled on May 6. Last week, the FDA updated the warning when it classified the recall as a “Class I” health risk meaning it could “cause serious adverse health consequences or death.” There have been no reports of anyone falling sick, Hy-Vee said.
