Bahrain to Become Global Hub with World’s First International Date Observatory

Bahrain is set to raise its profile in agriculture and food security by launching the world’s inaugural International Date Observatory. This unique initiative will position the Kingdom as a central hub for comprehensive data, in-depth research, and trade information regarding the date industry globally.

Official Approval and Strategic Role

The Shura Council recently endorsed a draft law confirming Bahrain as the permanent site for the observatory through an agreement with the International Date Council. This endorsement formally designates the Kingdom as the global headquarters for this pioneering institution.

Functions of the Observatory

The observatory will focus on gathering, analysing, and disseminating information related to date production and market trends worldwide. Data will be collected directly in Bahrain, enhancing the country’s international exposure in this sector. It will serve as a centralized resource for research, trade analysis, and policy development related to the date palm industry.

Collaborative and Sustainable Development

Initially, the observatory will operate under government leadership, with plans to gradually involve private sector partnerships. This approach aims to support the industry’s growth and ensure the sustainability of date and palm cultivation. Minister Wael Al Mubarak emphasized that Bahrain’s expertise and resources are key to strengthening the sector on both regional and global stages.

Alignment with National Environmental Goals

The establishment of the observatory complements Bahrain’s National Tree-Planting Plan, launched by His Royal Highness the Crown Prince and Prime Minister in 2022, which targets doubling the Kingdom’s date palm trees by 2035. So far, Bahrain has surpassed environmental targets by planting 1.6 million mangroves and nearly 600,000 other trees along roads and open spaces. This effort underscores Bahrain’s commitment to food security, sustainable agriculture, and environmental stewardship.

These achievements reflect the Kingdom’s ambition to lead through innovation and green development in agriculture within the region.
