Bahrain Secures Over 22,000 Livestock and Nearly 10,000 Tons of Meat Ahead of Ramadan

The Kingdom of Bahrain has boosted its food supply in preparation for the upcoming Ramadan period, confirming the arrival of over 22,500 head of livestock alongside nearly 10,000 tons of imported meat. Local authorities are actively facilitating additional shipments to ensure market stability during this high-demand season.

Livestock Arrivals and Future Shipments

From early January through mid-February 2026, Bahrain received 22,500 animals, comprising 20,300 sheep and 2,250 cattle. Plans are underway for further livestock imports, expected to include 30,000 sheep, 1,500 cattle, and 100 camels. These future shipments are contingent upon obtaining the necessary import permits.

Import Regulations and Ministry Preparations

Engineering official Asim Abdul Latif Abdullah, Undersecretary for Agriculture and Animal Wealth at the Ministry of Municipalities and Agriculture Affairs, highlighted that all preparatory measures have been completed. The ministry operates under Law No. 8 of 2003 concerning veterinary quarantine rules within GCC states and related executive regulations, to facilitate smooth import processing.

Meat Imports and Permit Approvals

Imported meat, both chilled and frozen, has reached approximately 9,853 tons, divided into 3,294 tons of red meat and 6,559 tons of poultry. To meet the increased consumption rates during the holy month, the ministry has recently authorized 250 additional import permits to diversify supply chains and open new markets.

Addressing Ramadan Demand

The ministry anticipates a surge in meat consumption during Ramadan across households and the hospitality sector. Engineer Abdullah emphasized ongoing efforts to maintain consistent food availability and to support the local market by securing diverse and ample supply sources throughout the period.
