Bahrain has officially launched its new season for releasing fish into its territorial waters. This initiative underscores the nation’s dedication to enhancing national food security and ensuring the long-term health of its marine ecosystems. The program was inaugurated at an event organized by the Supreme Council for Environment, with key figures in attendance. The launch signals the commencement of a carefully designed plan to revitalize fish populations and increase marine production within Bahrain’s waters.
Commitment to Marine Wealth
During the launch, the Minister of Oil and Environment highlighted Bahrain’s steadfast commitment to strategic initiatives aimed at cultivating and preserving marine resources. He emphasized that boosting fish stocks is a vital component of the country’s broader food security strategy.
Structured Release Program
The initiative includes a program to release approximately 100,000 young fish throughout the year. The release of these juvenile fish will occur in carefully selected marine locations that meet specific scientific criteria. These locations are chosen to provide optimal environmental conditions that will support the growth, feeding, and protection of the fish from predators.
Scientific Approach
The Minister also commended the aquaculture center team for their expertise and dedication in ensuring the success of the project. He noted that the initiative reflects a well-planned and scientifically sound approach to fortifying marine resources.
Ongoing Efforts
The national aquaculture center plays a crucial role in regularly producing fish fingerlings that are suitable for release into the sea. The center’s efforts also focus on producing species that are highly sought after in local markets. This strategy aims to alleviate pressure on natural fishing areas, enhance overall fish stocks, and contribute to sustainable development goals.
