Bahrain Announces Two-Month Ban on Net Fishing for Kingfish

Bahrain is set to introduce a two-month restriction on the use of nets to catch kingfish in its territorial waters, as authorities move to safeguard a key marine species during its breeding season. The Supreme Council for Environment said the measure will run from August 15 to October 15, 2026, and will apply throughout the Kingdom’s waters. Fishing for kingfish will not be completely halted, but fishermen must use lines rather than nets during the restricted period. Officials described the step as part of wider efforts to protect fish populations and maintain the long-term health of Bahrain’s marine environment.

Dates and permitted methods

The ban specifically targets net-based kingfish fishing between August 15 and October 15. During these two months, fishermen who target kingfish will be allowed to do so only through line fishing, a method considered less harmful to breeding stocks and unintended catches.

Protecting breeding stocks

Authorities said the timing of the restriction is linked to the kingfish spawning period, when the species is especially important to protect. By limiting net fishing during this window, Bahrain aims to give fish stocks a better chance to replenish and support a more sustainable marine ecosystem.

Compliance and enforcement

The Supreme Council for Environment called on fishermen to follow the rules throughout the ban period. It warned that anyone found illegally catching kingfish with nets during the restriction could face legal measures. The council said cooperation from the fishing sector is essential to ensure the policy achieves its conservation goals.

Handling accidental catches

Fishermen who find kingfish trapped in nets or other gear during the ban must release them immediately. Authorities stressed that any released fish should be handled carefully to avoid injury, helping ensure they can return safely to the sea.
