Abu Dhabi recently concluded the second edition of Global Food Week, reinforcing its position as a leader in global discussions about food innovation and sustainability. The event, organized by ADNEC Group in collaboration with the Abu Dhabi Agriculture and Food Safety Authority (ADAFSA) and the Abu Dhabi Investment Office (ADIO), underscored the UAE’s dedication to building a secure and sustainable food ecosystem.
National Food Security Strategy 2051
During the event, Sheikh Dr. Majid Sultan Al Qassimi introduced the UAE’s updated National Food Security Strategy 2051. The strategy aims to establish the UAE as one of the most food-secure nations by focusing on technology, including smart farming and efficient distribution systems. Al Qassimi stressed that teamwork between government, industry, and the community is vital for achieving true resilience.
Diversifying Protein Sources
A key element of the UAE’s strategy involves diversifying protein sources using plant-based and alternative protein innovations. Al Qassimi highlighted the importance of sustainable diets in reducing the environmental impact of food production globally.
International Insights
Josef Schmidhuber from the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, pointed out similarities with Singapore’s advanced farming methods and the Netherlands’ innovation-driven food systems. He noted that the UAE’s unique environment requires a localized yet globally informed approach and emphasized the importance of food security as a part of national security.
Innovation on Display
The Protein Alternatives (PALT) exhibition showcased a variety of innovative products. Switch Foods, a UAE-based plant-based meat pioneer, presented its locally produced, high-protein alternatives, aimed at promoting healthier lifestyles and environmental awareness. Believer Meats displayed its cultivated meat technology, demonstrating a method of producing meat from animal cells, potentially revolutionizing food production while minimizing environmental impact.
