Swiss Authorities Detect Toxin in Recalled Danone Aptamil Infant Formula

Swiss food safety officials have revealed the presence of a toxin linked to nausea and vomiting in certain infant formula products recently recalled by Danone. The toxin, identified as cereulide, was detected in two variants of Danone’s Aptamil Pronutra formula during routine testing amid concerns about contamination.

Details of the Contamination

Tests by the Swiss Federal Food Safety and Veterinary Office uncovered cereulide in “Aptamil Pronutra 1, 1.2 kg” and “Aptamil Pronutra Junior 12+”. These findings came after a series of recalls by Danone prompted by safety concerns over the affected batches.

Health Concerns and Reported Cases

The discovery has raised significant alarm as cereulide is known to cause symptoms such as nausea and vomiting. Since February 3, Swiss authorities have received 20 reports of potential illness linked to these contaminated formula products.

Recall and Ongoing Investigation

In response to the findings, Danone initiated a recall on February 5 to remove the impacted products from the market and prevent further consumer exposure. Swiss regulators continue to monitor the situation closely to ensure the safety of consumers and determine the source of contamination.

The affected products are a reminder of the critical importance of vigilant quality control in infant nutrition to protect vulnerable populations.
