Consumers across the United States are being alerted to a major recall involving over 20,000 peanut butter products. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced that Ventura Foods has voluntarily recalled these items because of contamination risks. Specifically, pieces of blue plastic were discovered in manufacturing filters, prompting this precautionary measure.
Reason for the Recall
The recall stems from the detection of foreign material in the products, which could cause temporary or reversible health issues. The FDA has classified the recall as Class II, indicating that while the contamination poses health risks, these are unlikely to be severe or life-threatening.
Affected Products
All recalled products were packaged in single-serve containers, making it unlikely that larger jars commonly found in home pantries are affected. The impacted items include:
- Single-serve creamy peanut butter packets in sizes of 0.5-ounce, 0.75-ounce, and 1.12-ounce.
- Twin packs combining creamy peanut butter with grape jelly, available in 1-ounce and 1.12-ounce sizes.
- Twin packs combining creamy peanut butter with strawberry jam, also in 1-ounce and 1.12-ounce sizes.
These products were distributed under multiple brand names such as US Foods, DYMA Brands, Flavor Fresh, Katy’s Kitchen, Sysco House Recipe, and Gordon Food Service. Detailed information including lot numbers can be accessed via the FDA’s enforcement report.
Geographical Distribution
The recalled peanut butter items were sold in 40 states across the country, including Alabama, California, Texas, New York, Florida, and many others, covering a wide swath of the U.S. population.
What Consumers Should Do
If you possess any of the recalled products, it is advised to dispose of them or return the items to the retailer depending on available guidance. In the unlikely event that you have consumed these products and experience any health issues, consulting a healthcare provider promptly is recommended.
