Bahrain’s Peninsula Farms Cultivating Sustainable Agriculture

What started as a small hydroponic project in 2012 has blossomed into a leading example of sustainable agriculture in Bahrain. Peninsula Farms, under the guidance of General Manager Shaikh Rashid bin Khalifa Al Khalifa, is dedicated to strengthening the nation’s food security while pioneering innovative environmental practices. From humble beginnings with hydroponic lettuce, tomatoes, and peppers, the farm has expanded to nearly 35,000 square meters of open-field farming, offering shoppers more nutritious, locally-sourced options.

Expanding Production

Originally focused on hydroponic produce like lettuce and tomatoes, Peninsula Farms has steadily broadened its agricultural offerings. They have successfully replaced several imported items with locally grown alternatives. This expansion provides consumers with fresher, more nutritious choices and reduces the distance food travels from farm to table.

Sustainability Initiatives

Peninsula Farms is committed to minimizing its environmental impact. A solar power initiative currently meets approximately 70% of the farm’s energy requirements, with plans to reach 100% in the future. The farm also adheres to a strict zero-waste philosophy, exemplified by transforming unsold goat milk into high-quality, natural soap.

Community Engagement

Beyond technological and environmental innovations, Peninsula Farms emphasizes the importance of community and culture. Shaikh Rashid believes in fostering a stronger connection between consumers and local farmers. The farm actively promotes the idea that knowing your farmer is the best way to ensure the quality and integrity of your food.

Aligned with Vision 2030

Peninsula Farms’ goals are closely linked with Bahrain’s Vision 2030, which includes food production, sustainability, waste management, and tree planting initiatives. Shaikh Rashid hopes that the community will continue to support local farmers, particularly by visiting the farmers’ market to discover the fresh treasures grown within Bahrain.
