According to a recent study conducted by The World Resources Institute, Bahrain makes the list of one of the top countries prone to undergo a water crisis by 2040. This indicates that the current water supply of Bahrain is at risk not just because of a misuse of water and its consumption but also, and significantly so, climate change, making it the least water-secure region in the world. What further adds to this is its heavy reliance on desalinated sea water and groundwater. Thus, it is essential that Bahrain imposes new food monitoring strategies that are tailored to conserve its local water supplies and provide a means through which Bahrain may also maintain its food security.

Additionally, a 2009 report on Bahrain’s state of environment given by the Public Commision for the Protection of marine resources, environment and wildlife, Bahrain falls under the category of one of the world’s highest water stressor regions. The impacts of this have been vast particularly since 67% of the agricultural sector and 30% of the drinking water demand have increased due to population, and in turn, consumption growth - a trend that adds further weight to the already depleting water resources Bahrain has to offer.
